Our Background: Why Make Tables?
Big Wood was born out of necessity. My wife and I were after an outdoor dining table and we wanted something that was rustic, heavy, and didn't have an overly manufactured look. After coming up empty when searching for just the right piece, I decided that there was only one thing for it. Enlisting the wisdom, and brute strength, of my father one summer, we built a version of the 'Burton' table and an idea was born. Surely I wasn't the only one looking for such a piece...

You are at the centre of this process. I engage with you throughout, from the initial enquiry, capturing what you are looking for and how we can achieve it, and then providing you with updates through pictures, videos, texts and calls as the build progresses. Some of the tables I've built have been made from wood that is over a century old. I hope the piece stays in your family for just as long and every effort is made to accommodate everything you want in it's design.
How we Approach Sustainability
Recycled timber has a feel about it. It is tactile, historical, warm, and of course, enduring. Reclaiming such an old thing and breathing life into it once again is an immensely satisfying notion. I source timber from the Mornington Peninsula as well as some of the older parts of Melbourne and love to find out the story behind whatever timber we are using for your table...
